MONTGOMERY – The Alabama State Bar announced today the selection of attorney and past president of the Alabama State Bar Phillip McCallum as its new executive director. McCallum will replace longtime Executive Director Keith Norman upon his retirement in June.
“I am pleased that Phillip was selected as the Alabama State Bar’s new executive director,” said Alabama State Bar President J. Cole Portis of the Beasley Allen Law Firm (Montgomery). “He is a servant leader who has answered a unique calling to serve his beloved profession and the public. Phillip possesses the ability to motivate others and the vision necessary to help Alabama lawyers. I am excited to observe the fruits of his labors in the coming years.”
McCallum is a founding shareholder of McCallum, Methvin & Terrell, P.C. He is a graduate of Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law and was admitted to practice law in Alabama in 1988. From 1989 to 1992, he worked as a prosecutor in the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office before becoming a civil litigator.

McCallum has served as president of the Birmingham Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division, as a member of the Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice’s Commission for Professionalism and as a member of the Alabama State Bar’s Board of Bar Commissioners representing the 10th Judicial Circuit of Alabama. He also served as president of the Alabama State Bar (2012-2013). In addition to his admittance to the Alabama State Bar, he is also a member of the Texas Bar Association, Oklahoma Bar Association, West Virginia Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He is also a member of the National Conference of Bar Presidents and the Southern Conference of Bar Presidents.
The Alabama State Bar is the official statewide organization of lawyers in Alabama and currently has more than 17,800 members. The Alabama State Bar is dedicated to promoting the professional responsibility and competence of its members, improving the administration of justice and increasing the public understanding of and respect for the law.
