Only One Hour? Really?

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

If your new iPad has left you feeling like the dog that just caught the car (What do I do with this thing, now that I finally have it?) there are a couple of resources you can’t do without.

One is iPad in One Hour for Lawyers  and the other is iPad Apps in One Hour for Lawyers, both by acclaimed technology speaker and writer Tom Mighell.  These slim, new books from the ABA Law Practice Management Section are, respectively, a veritable operator’s manual and the Sears Roebuck Christmas Catalog for the iPad.  Between them, you’ll be using your iPad very productively in your practice in almost no time.

iPad in One Hour for Lawyers is divided into two sections.  The first consists of six lessons that cover all the basics of setting up and using your iPad.  The second section, aptly titled Beyond the Lessons, covers configuring security settings and provides techniques, including finger moves and shortcuts, for using your iPad like a pro.  And the final chapter of the book lays out the best apps for lawyers, and what they can do for you.

As you move quickly through the book, you’ll learn how to configure iTunes to manage the information to be added to your iPad and sync it, then set up email, calendars and contacts.  There are step-by-step directions to make both your web mail accounts, like Gmail, Yahoo mail and others, and your Microsoft Exchange available.  There are lots of illustrations, so you’re never confused about what to do next.

There is a chapter on managing apps, including setting up app folders to group similar apps together and keep your home screens organized and uncluttered, and one on apps that will allow you to add documents to your iPad and then work on them while always staying synced-up with the latest version.  You’ll also learn how to be productive with your iPad while away from the office, with suggestions for keyboards, styluses that will allow you to make handwritten notes, and stands that will allow you to most comfortably use your iPad.

Beyond the Lessons will tell you everything you need to know about how to passcode-protect your iPad and also set it up to locate and, if needed, remotely wipe all data, in the event that it’s lost or stolen.  The final chapter covers best apps for lawyers, and includes a link to an ever-expanding list of apps, including a description of what they do and why you really need them.

Once you master the device, iPad Apps in One Hour for Lawyers will help you find the best apps to get organized and improve your productivity; create, manage and store documents on your iPad; find apps for billing and litigation; find the best news, reading and reference apps; and maximize your social networking power.
