If you’ve been thinking about updating your law firm’s technology, but haven’t been sure about what to get rid of and what to replace it with, you haven’t waited in vain. The 2010 Solo and Small Firm Legal Technology Guide: Critical Decisions Made Simple just hit my desk, and it has all the info you need to make informed decisions about new purchases for your office.

Authored by Sharon Nelson, John Simek and Michael Maschke, all of Sensei Enterprises, the book covers, in short, simple chapters, everything you need to know to chose the right computers, monitors, laptops, printers and scanners for your practice. There are also chapters on operating systems, including the Mac OS, servers and server operating systems, and backup hardware and systems and system security. And if you’re thinking of switching to a Mac, there’s an additional chapter on hardware and software just for the Mac in the law office.

In addition to covering the hardware waterfront, the book also contains helpful information on what the authors label productivity software, including the available office suites (MS, Corel and Open Office), case management and time and billing, document assembly and management, remote access and collaboration. To round out the book, there is also a chapter on the Legal Implications of Social Networking, and a chapter on the PaperLESS office authored by Ross Kodner.
