In 2021, six sites in Alabama were chosen by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation to receive commemorative historic Votes for Women markers for the National Votes for Women Trail.

Retaining female attorneys is an important issue. Polls, surveys, reports, and articles have been conducted and written on this subject offering solutions. Businesses with more diverse employees have been shown to be more financially successful and the employees more satisfied and content with their firms.[1]

I have found wisdom and wit in the fictional character Forrest Gump, a creation of my friend, author Winston Groom. The movie based on Groom’s novel, Forrest Gump, contains a scene in which Forrest is running mile after mile with a crowd following him, and for no particular reason, he just stops running. It is difficult to stop running in an active law practice, but when I finally did, I began to reflect on my situation.

Cumberland School of Law is celebrating its 175th anniversary this year, and the women of Cumberland are a substantial part of that history. In fact, the school’s current first-year class, the class of 2024, boasts a record 59 percent female law students.

The Covid-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on virtually everyone, and lawyers are no different. Mediation is just one of the areas in which our practices have been significantly affected. While some of the Covid-19 consequences were temporary, the ability to gather virtually or remotely is here to stay. Dorothy was right: “We’re not in Kansas anymore!”

The history of black attorneys in Alabama is a rich one, particularly their contributions during the civil rights struggle. But those attorneys, just like the black legal pioneers in recent decades who rose to seats on the Alabama Supreme Court, the federal bench, and at the helm of the Alabama Bar, stood on the shoulders of giants.

It is a common misconception that cyberattacks are instant, that if you have been attacked, it happened in that moment. It is violating enough to imagine someone breaking into your home, but I want you to imagine it.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Alabama State Bar’s Volunteer Lawyers Program. As a way to thank all of our volunteers, we selected 30 representatives and have been sharing their stories over the past year.

It goes without saying (but I will nevertheless state it for the record): practice before the Alabama appellate courts in civil matters requires familiarity with the Alabama Rules of Appellate Procedure, the Alabama Rules of Civil Procedure, statutory law, and judicial precedent.
